ANIME EXPO PICS!
posted Tuesday, July 08 2008 - 09:09 PM

It’s 11:34 on Saturday morning, July 5th, and the huge Live Programming 3 room is as dark as a tomb. 70-or-so people have their eyes fixed on the giant video screen watching a preview of “Dragon Academy,” the first-ever Oplay game. We are playing the Prologue live in front of an audience for the first time, and it seems to be going well. When the uncle character appears onscreen there are appreciative murmurs from the female portion of the audience, along with a cry of “He’s hot!” Holy cow, the uncle is probably the least “hot” character in the game! (Here’s a slightly color-corrected picture from Gia’s blog.)

Oplay’s inspiration comes from Japanese dating sims, but unlike dating sims, which are based on stat-building and repetitive actions, Oplay is all about story. Your choices and actions affect the flow of the plot and your relationship with the other characters. The story unfolds in a series of episodes, just like in anime or manga – but in this story you get to interact with the characters, create relationships with them, and influence the course of events, which is why we call Oplay “immersive manga!”

The “O” in Oplay stands for “online.” The games are online-only, so you don’t need to download anything, and all you need to play them is a Flash player. The Prologue is free, and subsequent episodes of the story will cost less than a volume of manga. The Prologue and Episode One of “Dragon Academy,” will be online very shortly.

Speaking of Oplay, Creative Director Audry Taylor finally got to meet up with the character designer of “Dragon Academy,” Hunter Bonyun (AKA Lone-Momo on Deviantart) at AX, after a year of only phone, email and IM contact!  Here's Hunter!

Hunter and her sister had a table in Artist’s Alley. Here’s some of Hunter’s incredible art.

Audry examines some of Hunter’s recent work – she’s always this intense when checking out art.

Of course, our main thing is still publishing manga, so we also ran trailers for three new series. “Ultimate Venus” (out now) is the delightful new series from Takako Shigematsu, the creator of “Tenshi Ja Nai!! I'm No Angel.” “Bound Beauty” (coming in September) is the AMAZING new series from “Her Majesty’s Dog” creator Mick Takeuchi. And "O7-GHOST" ... well, more about that later. We even had banners for them at our booth:

Excitement was also running high for the publication of Wendy Pini’s super-steamy “Masque of the Red Death” (Volume 1 will hit stores this October.) Even though her panel was restricted to persons over the age of 18, she drew a BIG crowd on Friday night! Here’s Wendy preparing for a signing at our booth the next day:

Our friend Mikako Ogata from Aurora stopped by to say “hi.” (She’s a big “Cantarella” fan.) Aurora gave away beautiful big shopping bags this year and they were everywhere! (That's Kai Connick -- one of our ace adaptors and occasional booth slave -- dressed for the decadent party in Wendy's "Masque" comic.)

Hmmm, I feel like I left something out. Wasn’t there another upcoming series we were promoting…? Something about ghosts…?

Yeah, that’s right, we’re nuts here at Go! Comi. We thought it would be fun to make a huge friggin’ banner for our incredible new series “07-GHOST.” Little did we realize it would be the ONLY banner in the main hall of the LA Convention Center! Oh, well, I guess that means we got noticed.

Audry at the top of the banner!

Did I mention we’re publishing “07-GHOST?” Look for it in December!

An Exclusive Invitation...
posted Friday, June 27 2008 - 10:54 AM

To our most loyal Masque readers, we extend this invitation to be the first to glimpse Anton Prosper's dazzling world in full color on the printed page. Go! Comi will be accepting Pre-Orders for a Special Edition of "Masque of the Red Death", available exclusively on through the gocomi.com online store. "Masque" will be available everywhere in October, but if you order it through our store, we will guarantee your copy will be in your hands before it ever reaches store shelves. Though the real appeal of the Special Edition isn't that you can get it first – it's that you're getting it from the creator's hand. Wendy Pini will be autographing the Special Edition copies, of which there will only be a limited number available. The Go! staff will then send them off with tender care to their new homes.

Be the first to accept the invitation to indulge in Wendy Pini's extravagant, decadent, delicious "Masque of the Red Death." Prosper awaits you...
